Solar panels and batteries need little maintenance, but regular checks keep them performing well. This guide covers what owners can check themselves, when to call a professional, and how monitoring helps you spot problems early.

What you can check

Use your monitoring app to watch daily and monthly generation. A sudden drop on a sunny day can point to a fault. Rain usually keeps panels clean in Scotland, but bird droppings or lichen in sheltered spots may need attention.

Professional checks

Periodic electrical inspections check connections, isolators and inverter health. Coastal and island systems benefit from checks for corrosion on frames and fixings.

Common issues

Inverter faults, communication dropouts and tripped isolators are the most common problems. Birds nesting under panels can be prevented with mesh guards.

Our installation partner provides aftercare support for systems we arrange.

Non-domestic buildings in Scotland

Farms, offices, schools, warehouses, social housing blocks and new-build developments each raise different design questions. Large roofs often support systems that need G99 approval from SP Energy Networks or SSEN before connection, and export may be limited where the local network is constrained, which is more common in parts of the Highlands, Argyll and the islands.

Good projects start with half-hourly consumption data, a structural check of the roof and a clear understanding of when the building uses power. A daytime-heavy business usually uses most of its solar directly, while buildings that are empty in the day may benefit from storage. Your proposal sets out the design, the connection route and the full price.

How our survey works

Every project starts with a no-obligation survey. We look at your roof orientation, pitch, shading and condition, your fuse board and meter position, where a battery or inverter could go, and how your household uses electricity through the day and across the Scottish seasons. You then receive a written quote showing the equipment, the expected generation for your roof and the full price, so you can compare it fairly. We handle the network connection paperwork with your local distribution network operator, which is SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland and SSEN in the north, Highlands and islands. We install through MCS-certified partners. Solar panels and batteries are 0% VAT until March 2027. Finance available, subject to status.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install solar panels and batteries across Scotland?

Yes. We arrange solar panel and home battery installations across Scotland through MCS-certified partners, covering houses, flats with suitable roofs and businesses. A surveyor checks your roof, electrics and usage before we give you a written quote.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes. Most existing solar systems can take a home battery, either through a hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled battery. The survey checks your current inverter, fuse board and space so we can recommend a battery that suits your system.

Is finance available?

Finance available, subject to status. Your written quote shows the full price, and we can talk you through monthly payment options if you would like to spread the cost.

How do I get a quote?

Call 0141 230 0198 or fill in the quote form. We arrange a survey of your home, then send a written, no-obligation quote showing the equipment, expected generation and full price.

Do I need to clean my panels?

Usually not in Scotland, as rain does most of the work.

What if my inverter fails?

Check the warranty first, then contact your installer.

Can you maintain systems you did not install?

Ask us. We can often help assess and advise.
