Battery Storage Scotland: Smart Home Battery Systems

Quick answer

A home battery stores electricity from your solar panels, or from the grid on cheaper overnight rates, so you can use it when you need it. This guide explains how batteries work in Scottish homes, what size suits different households and where a battery can be installed safely.

A home battery stores electricity from your solar panels, or from the grid on cheaper overnight rates, so you can use it when you need it. This guide explains how batteries work in Scottish homes, what size suits different households and where a battery can be installed safely.

Why batteries matter in Scotland

Scottish households use a lot of electricity in the evening and through the darker months, while solar generates mostly in the middle of the day and in summer. A battery bridges that gap by storing daytime generation for later use.

Batteries can also charge from the grid on cheaper overnight tariffs, which is useful in winter when solar output is low.

Choosing a size

Most homes choose a battery with around 5kWh to 10kWh of usable capacity. Smaller homes with low evening use may need less, while larger households, homes with electric heating, or those with an EV may want more. We size the battery from your actual usage.

Where to install it

Most home batteries are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) units fitted in a garage, utility room or outbuilding. Lithium batteries do not like charging in freezing conditions, so unheated locations in northern Scotland need a unit with suitable temperature management.

How our survey works

Every project starts with a no-obligation survey. We look at your roof orientation, pitch, shading and condition, your fuse board and meter position, where a battery or inverter could go, and how your household uses electricity through the day and across the Scottish seasons. You then receive a written quote showing the equipment, the expected generation for your roof and the full price, so you can compare it fairly. We handle the network connection paperwork with your local distribution network operator, which is SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland and SSEN in the north, Highlands and islands. We install through MCS-certified partners. Solar panels and batteries are 0% VAT until March 2027. Finance available, subject to status.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install solar panels and batteries across Scotland?

Yes. We arrange solar panel and home battery installations across Scotland through MCS-certified partners, covering houses, flats with suitable roofs and businesses. A surveyor checks your roof, electrics and usage before we give you a written quote.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes. Most existing solar systems can take a home battery, either through a hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled battery. The survey checks your current inverter, fuse board and space so we can recommend a battery that suits your system.

Is finance available?

Finance available, subject to status. Your written quote shows the full price, and we can talk you through monthly payment options if you would like to spread the cost.

How do I get a quote?

Call 0141 230 0198 or fill in the quote form. We arrange a survey of your home, then send a written, no-obligation quote showing the equipment, expected generation and full price.

Can I add a battery to existing solar panels?

Usually yes, either with a hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled battery. We check your current inverter on survey.

Will a battery keep my lights on in a power cut?

Only if the system includes backup or emergency power functions. Not all batteries do, so ask us if this matters to you.

How long do home batteries last?

Most come with a warranty of around 10 years, often with a limit on throughput. See our battery lifespan guide for more.
