Whether a heat pump is worth it for your Scottish home depends on your current heating, how well insulated the home is, and how it pairs with solar and a battery. This guide sets out the questions to ask so you can judge it for your own home, rather than relying on general claims.
When a heat pump tends to suit
Homes heated by oil, LPG or electric storage heaters are often the strongest candidates. Reasonably insulated homes with space for a hot water cylinder and an outdoor unit are easier to convert. New-build homes are usually designed with heat pumps in mind.

When to wait
If your home is draughty or poorly insulated, insulation should come first. Very small flats with no space for a cylinder, or tenements where an outdoor unit cannot be placed, may need a different approach.
Running costs depend on tariffs
Heat pump running costs depend on electricity prices, your tariff and how efficiently the system runs. A properly designed system with low flow temperatures runs more efficiently. Solar panels and a battery can help, especially outside midwinter.

How our survey works
Every project starts with a no-obligation survey. We look at your roof orientation, pitch, shading and condition, your fuse board and meter position, where a battery or inverter could go, and how your household uses electricity through the day and across the Scottish seasons. You then receive a written quote showing the equipment, the expected generation for your roof and the full price, so you can compare it fairly. We handle the network connection paperwork with your local distribution network operator, which is SP Energy Networks in central and southern Scotland and SSEN in the north, Highlands and islands. We install through MCS-certified partners. Solar panels and batteries are 0% VAT until March 2027. Finance available, subject to status.
